Recreation

The Derry Parks and Recreation Department offers programs and activities for all ages. Organizations such as Little League and Girl Scouts provide other programs as well. Derry has many playgrounds, a skateboard park, athletic fields, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, a public gymnasium, beaches with boat launches and concession stands, two golf courses, a dog park, and many trails for hiking. Beaches

Hood Park offers a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, a roller hockey area, swimming and scheduled playground activities. Gallien's Beach offers swimming, kayaking, fishing, and concession services for town residents.


Playgrounds

Known as the Humphrey Road Playground, this large community-built playground features extensive slides, swings and equipment to keep children entertained for hours. A special needs area is also included. Alexander-Carr Playground offers a playground, skateboard park, tennis courts, cledding, cross country skiing, skating rink, pavillion, indoor activity center, and other recreational activities.


Children's Museum

Known as The MET, The Children's Metamorphosis located in downtown Derry is geared for children ages 1-8. It offers unique hands-on exhibits, a Family Resource Center, and special programs each week.


Farm Produce

Located in Derry, J&F Farms has been selling fresh produce to area residents for over 15 years. Open May through October, the famous "U-Pick" Strawberry Season opens in mid-June. A fun family outing!


Libraries

The Derry Public Library (tel 432-6140) is open Monday through Saturday, with the Taylor Libray (tel 432-7186) in East Derry open Monday through Friday. Both offer a variety of programs for children and adults.


Boys & Girls Club of Greater Derry

Serving children ages 7-20, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Derry offers a wide range of recreational, athletic, educational, leadership, vocational, and arts & crafts programs. Derry is proud to be the home of this strong youth organization which boasts over 1,300 members drawing from as many as 14 communities.


Firefighter's Museum

The Firefighter's Museum is housed at the Central Street Fire Station. Informational tours are held by appointment only (tel 432-8205).


Derry Museum of History

Located on the lower level of the historic Adams Memorial Building, the museum tells the town's history - starting as the home to the Native Americans and the later settlement by the Scotch-Irish in 1719. There are exhibits on the railroads, trolleys, shoe industry, and H.P. Hood Milk Company. There are also many items on display from Pinkerton Academy, police and fire departments, local churches, doctors, and the town's service men and women. Adams Memorial Building

Home to the Greater Derry Arts Countil, Southern NH Community School of the Arts, and Greater Derry Chamber of Commerce, the Opera House features cultural and civic events for all ages. For events information, call 437-0505 or visit www.derryarts.org.


Tupelo Music Hall

Scott Hayward’s Tupelo Music Hall features acoustic, folk and Celtic artists while showcasing other performers. Tupelo is a hip venue where people of all ages can enjoy blues, jazz, bluegrass and tribute music. The hall is an ideal place for patrons to sit back, relax and listen to some terrific music, Hayward said. Guests 21 and older can bring their own beer and wine.


Robert Frost Farm

Open weekends in May and June, then Wednesday through Sunday during the summer, this farm was home to America's beloved poet from 1900-1911. The house with its furnishings is open to the public, and the grounds are a great place to take a walk or picnic lunch. For more information, call 432-3091.


Taylor Sawmill

The oldest operational up-and-down sawmill is located in Derry and is open several days each summer for visitors to tour. For more information, call 271-3556.


Hidden Valley RV & Golf Park

An 800-acre campground offering a full-size golf course in addition to an executive golf course. Open May through October with special events highlighting the summer season. For more information on camping or golfing, call 887-3767.


Hoodkroft Country Club

Located in town, a semi-private golf course with nine holes. During the winter months, the golf course provides acres of area for cross country skiers. For more information, call 434-0651.


Holiday Parade

Held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, one of the largest parades in NH is Derry's Holiday Parade. It boasts award winning floats, marching bands, clowns and fun for the entire family. For more information call 432-8205.


DerryFest

Held the third Saturday in September, this community event offers hundreds of booths filled with food, crafts, games and activities for the entire family. For more information, call 437-8232.
